Archives and Museums

The objective of the Archives and Museums (AMP) programme, launched in April 2019 is to energise institutions like museums and archives as platforms for dialogue and discourse. It will provide the institution, as well as scholars and practitioners, the opportunity to generate new, critical and creative approaches to engage the public, based on materials in selected archives and museums. The focus is on both institutions and individuals, encouraging them to become co-producers of knowledge and expertise. It prioritises processes as well as outcomes, so as to ensure that capacity building at these selected Archives and Museums will take place alongside knowledge production and artistic creation.

The programme implements two kinds of projects in association with the chosen institutions over a period of a year:

  • Scholarly Projects: These projects will aim at creating content and supporting the knowledge bank of the institution, culminating into tangible outcomes such as books and catalogues.
Budget: A maximum of Rs 2 lakh which will cover both research and final outcomes.
  • Creative Projects: These projects will aim at supporting the creative outcomes of interpreting the collections through exhibitions, films, workshops or other public engagements.
Budget: A maximum of Rs 2 lakh which will cover both research and final outcomes.

The Request for Proposals with various collaborators for the year 2023-24 will be announced from June onwards.

IFA specifically encourages projects in Indian languages, including English, so as to contribute to the discourse in various language contexts.

Archives and museums in India interested in collaborating with IFA on these projects could write to Ritwika Misra at ritwika@indiaifa.org for more details. To know about the collaborations in the past two years, click here.

The Archives and Museums programme in 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 was made possible with part-support from Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan New Delhi and in 2022-2023 with part-support from Parijat Foundation.

In 2018, the erstwhile Archival and Museum Fellowships initiative underwent a review process which comprised a conference (please refer to the conference note here) and a day long review convened by a panel of experts from the field – Rustom Bharucha, Joyoti Roy, Naman Ahuja and Shuddhabrata Sengupta. With the help of their recommendations, the Archives and Museums programme (AMP) has been formulated.
