IFA has received assistance from local trusts and international foundations, which have appreciated the professional systems and strategic thinking that we have brought to philanthropic work. Our donors include the Ford Foundation, the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Bhoruka Public Welfare Trust. Support has also come from the corporate sector, which has enabled IFA to enhance its public profile and assist grantees to extend the reach of their work.

Art opens our minds to unexpected ways of viewing ourselves and the world. No less vital is its function as an instrument of change, an invaluable form of community expression, a reminder of diversity, a source of healing, and a receptacle for memory.

While we are proud of our record of grant making, we also recognize how much more we could do with additional support from foundations, trusts, corporations and the general public. IFA could extend assistance to a larger number of deserving projects, underwrite more ambitious initiatives, and even enter new areas of grant making. We could address systemic problems that impede growth in the field. And we could sustain pioneering and catalytic projects for longer periods.

Appreciating our potential to extend our reach and achieve greater impact, the Sir Ratan Tata Trust has awarded IFA a generous grant in the form of a drawdown fund. We can use this fund to support our grant making, drawing from it amounts equal to what we raise from Indian citizens, non-resident Indians and Indian corporations and trusts.

IFA provides a flexible channel for extending support to the arts in India. Because of the inclusiveness of our grant making and the breadth of our constituency, we are well placed to match the different interests of donors with the needs of the arts community.

IFA can, for instance, facilitate Indians abroad to contribute to the preservation and vitality of the arts of India and thereby strengthen their emotional and cultural ties with their home country. With our special expertise and wide knowledge of the field, IFA is able to create a variety of funding opportunities for non-resident Indians, which respond to their particular interest in Indian culture.

IFA has also been able to enlist the support of companies because we recognize that corporations need to be provided with a strong business reason for supporting the arts. We develop proposals that create a synergy between our grant-related activities in the public domain and the corporate objective, brand positioning, target audience and geographical market focus of different business houses.

It is in and through the arts that a community views its past, speaks about what matters to it in the present, and envisions its future. If the culture of a people is under peril, they can no longer feel certain about their identity and place in the world. They are then rendered incapable of taking control of their lives.

Forging partnershsips with companies to showcase and disseminate the work of our grantees will, we hope, increase the business world's confidence in IFA's endeavours, and eventually persuade industry to go beyond supporting public activities to embrace an arts cause or field of their choice. We believe that businesses can enhance their corporate image and strengthen their relationship with consumers by owning a specific platform in the arts that reflects the core values of their brands.

Through IFA, individuals and organizations can dedicate funds to strengthen the arts

in India in many different ways. You could

  • Assist an arts sector (for instance, the crafts, architecture or the performing arts); s
  • Address an issue of concern to you (such as arts management or heritage conservation);
  • Support the arts in a particular region in India;
  • Fund an existing grant programme (arts research and documentation, arts collaboration, arts education or theatre development);
  • Support projects selected for grants in any year;
  • Provide assistance for disseminating the results of various projects;
  • Support institutional development at IFA (strengthen our promotional work, our infrastructure or our capacity to raise funds, for example); or
  • Make a contribution to our corpus fund.

Donations to IFA are managed by experienced professionals under the guidance of the Board's Finance Committee. The use of funds is monitored and evaluated closely. IFA maintains transparency in fund management at all points in time. Regular reports, both financial and narrative, enable donors to keep track of the purpose for which their contributions have been used and to what effect.

Donations to IFA qualify for exemption under section 80G of
the Income Tax Act.
