For a Karnataka tour of three contemporary shadow-puppetry performances targeted at children and involving university departments of folklore. The performances, which were jointly created by theatre artists, visual artists, musicians and puppeteers, will introduce children to the arts and help sustain folk performance traditions.

For continuing the work between an urban visual artist from Mumbai and four traditional artists in Bastar District, Madhya Pradesh, who will gain an appreciation of one another’s aesthetic concerns, techniques and creative processes. Paintings, sculptures and video films that emerge may form part of urban public installations.

Adishakti Laboratory for Theatre Art Research

Grant Period: Over one year

For research and examination, by a theatre director, a contemporary actor and a musician, of the textual nature of music in Koodiyattam, the classical theatre of Kerala. The project will result in a new theatre piece and a reworked version of an earlier production.

Geeta Ramanujam

Grant Period: Over one year

For a series of workshops for children in and around Bangalore by a storytelling team comprising a teacher, a craft specialist and an administrator. The project will connect storytelling to other creative activities, demonstrate alternative ways of looking at learning, and initiate a plan to establish a resource centre for storytelling and allied activities.

For workshops in villages and small towns by urban visual artists/potters and tribal and folk potters to facilitate an exchange of skills and techniques in pottery and ceramics.

Janapadam

Grant Period: Over one year

For workshops by a theatre director, a classical dance exponent and a traditional folk theatre group to share teaching and performance techniques and practices. The collaboration is expected to help the theatre group to formulate survival strategies, the dancer to reintroduce narrative singing and storytelling into Kuchipudi performance, and the director to strengthen training for his actors.

The Seagull Foundation for the Arts

Grant Period: Over three years

For preparatory research towards a travelling exhibition on the life and work of Nirode Mazumdar, considered by many to be an important and unfairly ignored figure in modern Indian painting. The study will also result in catalogues and publications for use in galleries and art schools, and the marketing of an audio-visual package.

For research towards developing curricula, teaching aids and reference materials for Mayurbhanj Chhau. Teachers, dancers, musicians and designers will come together for practical sessions to help systematise the expressive components of this dance form.

For developing a shadow play repertoire by contemporary theatre artists, visual artists, traditional leather puppeteers, folk musicians and children. Besides working on possible technical and performative innovations the collaborators will explore how shadow puppetry may be used in Karnataka’s schools and lead to the inclusion of the arts in school curricula.

For research towards an annotation of hitherto undisclosed material on Indian cinema, including government records, parliamentary debates, interviews, memoranda submitted by trade bodies, and reports of film inquiry committees. The project will highlight the hidden discourses that influence the making of Indian cinema.

Sabeena Gadihoke

Grant Period: Over one year and six months

For a feminist study of women photographers in the country, exploring their role and their distinct approach to photography. The study will help formulate a media course on women and photography; form part of the investigator’s dissertation on women and technology; and eventually feed into a film. The acquired material will be placed with a Delhi-based women’s media organisation and a school of communications.

For the study and documentation of the almost extinct pottery traditions of the women of the Kota community in the Nilgiris. The study will focus on the myth and lore linked to the tradition, which is kept alive only in yearly and secret ritual, and lead to a revival of the Kota women’s occupation and a market for their products.

Grant Period: Over one year and six months

For the study and documentation of Ganjifa, an indigenous card game, and the artists who paint the cards in various parts of the country. The research is expected to result in publications intended to introduce children to the game and its culture, booklets to help NGOs popularise and market Ganjifa card games, and material for use in multimedia.

Pankaj Rishi Kumar

Grant Period: Over one year

For the completion of Kumar Talkies, a documentary film highlighting the relationship between the crisis facing the small town of Kalpi in Uttar Pradesh and the decline of its oldest surviving cinema theatre. The film will explore the impact of the Mumbai film industry and popular culture on the town’s social and economic life, collective imagination and identity.
